of Korea University (RIKS) to encourage
the globalizationof Korean studies.
Pony Chung Fellowship
Globally, there is a growing interest towards Korean culture and Korean studies. Pony Chung Foundation, together with the Research Institute of Korean Studies of Korea University, invites excellent rising researchers in the area of Korean Studies to build the foundation for further growth of the field. By providing stable financial support and research infrastructure, we want to support domestic investigation, research, networking, and research paper publishing, thus contributing to the development and spread of Korean studies.

Foreign researchers who have earned their doctorate in Korean studies within the last five years can apply via e-mail. The final two recipients are selected through, first, a document screening, and then through an interview by the Pony Chung Fellowship Selection Committee. Selected researchers are provided with 50 million KRW as research fund and 10 million KRW as publishing fund. Every February, Pony Chung Foundation holds a yearly banquet to share the research performance of the year’s recipients.

RIKS Academy
RIKS Academy aims to provide a forum for young scholars in the field of Korean studies to communicate in the early stages of research, thereby expanding the network for Korean studies. Together with the Research Institute of Korean Studies (RIKS) of Korea University, we support various research and exchange activities for researchers.
This program is open to both Korean and foreign graduate students who are currently taking their masters or doctorate program majoring in Korean studies in universities either in Korea or overseas. A 10-day Korean Studies Academy is held for 20 researchers, who are selected through the screening process. Selected students are also granted with a 1 million KRW of research scholarship, and participants from other countries are provided with travel expenses (1 million KRW for the Americas and Europe, and 500,000 KRW for Asia).

Spread of Korean Studies
Prominent foreign scholars in Korean studies are invited to participate in sophisticated lectures. The lectures are filmed, archived, and released to the public as “Pony Chung Korean Studies Lectures” free of charge.
Tying in with the Pony Chung Fellowship, this program encourages Pony Chung fellows residing in Korea to play a leading role in academic workshop planning and to continue interacting with domestic scholars.
Tying in with the Pony Chung Fellowship, this program provides support for previous recipients to continue interaction with domestic scholars, and to strengthen the bond as a Pony Chung fellow. The program enables previous fellows to, upon return to their native countries, personally facilitate the hosting program held in foreign research institutes, hosting research presentations and establishing academic networks.
A follow-up to RIKS Academy, this program gives participants an opportunity to form a more in-depth academic network. The selected team will host its own seminar for approximately three months, and share research results during the workshop.
The academic events hosted by RIKS, such as foreign scholars’ lectures, RIKS Academy intensive lectures, and symposiums, will be filmed, archived, and provided for viewing. The most sophisticated level of lectures and research on Korean studies in Korea are released to scholars and the public free of charge.
